Developed in collaboration with industry experts, Flexible Industry Pathways are tailored to equip students with the essential skills, knowledge, and qualifications for seamless entry into employment or further study. These innovative programs provide students with a clearly defined journey through secondary school, leading to exciting opportunities in key growth industries across South Australia.

Flexible Industry Programs (FIPs) provide an industry-endorsed pathway to entrylevel employment, better preparing young people for real jobs, and providing a pipeline of young skilled workers for South Australia’s growing industry sectors.

FIPs aim to support students into school-based apprenticeships and traineeships.

Depending on the needs of employers, FIPs may include VET qualifications at Certificate II and III level that are appropriate for school students, employability skills training, and specific industry requirements for the pathway.

FIPs may include compulsory South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) subjects and contextualised delivery of other school subjects so that students can complete both a VET qualification and their SACE concurrently as part of their senior secondary program.

Flexible Industry Program (FIP) courses are full qualifications that are subsidised by the Government of South Australia.

To be eligible for subsidised training in a FIP course, you must be either an Australian citizen, permanent resident or an eligible VISA holder. You must also be in Year 11 to 13, studying SACE or equivalent, and 16 years old or turning 16 during Year 11. As part of the new Department for Education VET for Schools policy, all students wishing to undertake a FIP course, need to undergo the VET Readiness Orientation (VETRO) process which includes an Upfront Assessment of Need (UAN), Induction and Orientation to VET.

VETRO Process Map Applications & UAN

VET Readiness Orientation (VETRO)

To ensure students’ readiness to commence a VET program, the VET Readiness Orientation (VETRO) has been developed by the Department of Education and Skills SA (Department for State Development).

VETRO incorporates an Upfront Assessment of Needs (UAN), induction and orientation to VET to ensure that students enrol in a course that is right for them and has their personal and learning support needs planned for.

VETRO will determine a student’s readiness to commence a VET pathway and identify any support that a student may need to commence vocational training.

A successfully lodged VETRO application to Colour Cosmetica Academy includes submitting the VETRO Referral Part A form

School Enrolled Students VET Referral

Part A – Secondary School to complete

Complete Part A to enable the training provider to undertake an assessment of the student.

The school and training provider MUST retain a copy of this completed form for documentary evidence and monitoring purposes, which will be emailed to you once the referral is finalised.

Next steps

Once you click submit an email notification will be sent to the training provider for them to complete Part B. You will receive a notification once Part B is complete and the referral progresses to Part C if the student is accepted to enrol into the course.

The parent/guardian or independent student/student aged 18 years or older must then complete Part C of this form to give approval to proceed to enrolment with the training provider.

Once Part C is finalised by the Parent/Student, a copy of the completed referral will be provided to all involved.

Note that if the student is found not suitable at this time, Part C will not be sent to the parent/guardian or independent student/student aged 18 years or older. In this situation only the training provider and the school will receive a copy of the completed referral.

VETRO Language, Literacy Assessment (LLN)

Students wishing to apply for a VET for Secondary Schools place (VFSS) must undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Assessment as part of their VETRO requirements.

From 29 July 2024 the primary model for students undertaking LLN Assessments will be by school based invigilation.

Schools are able to conduct LLN Assessment sessions at their school, at a time that suits the school, through this school based invigilation process.

Literacy and Numeracy Assessment

The LLN assessment is a combined Snapshot Reading and Numeracy Indicator (SRNI) and Core Skills Profile for Adults (CSPA) assessment. Completing the LLN Assessment assists Colour Cosmetica Academy and the school identify support needs and suitability to undertake the qualification in line with Skills SA requirements.

Students are guided through the LLN modules as per their reading and numeracy levels. Please allow up to three hours for completion of the LLN assessment.

LLN result categories are:

No Gaps – results indicate the reading and numeracy levels are ACSF exit level 2
Minor Gaps – will need to submit a Support Plan
Significant Gaps – foundation skills development needed to be developed through the school before the school student can re-apply

Reasonable Adjustments

For variations from the primary model students can undertake the LLN assessment in person at Colour Cosmetica Academy campus or via an online Collaborate session.

Support Plan Agreements

Supporting your students throughout their training is a collaboration between your school and TAFE SA. Where support needs are identified through the VETRO process, a Support Plan Agreement will be established so that personal, disability and learning support needs are planned for.

Support Needs Assessment – where VET Coordinators identify that a student may have additional, personal, or disability support needs identified in the VETRO referral Part A form.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Assessment – students identified as having minor gaps will require a tailored Support Plan Agreement

Important considerations for VET

Work Placement: Some courses include mandatory industry placements to enhance practical learning.

Travel Requirements: Certain courses may require travel to a salon for work placement and you will be required to travel to Colour Cosmetica Academy.

Course Equipment: Students will need specific clothing and tools, depending on the course.

VET Courses outside the Flexible Industry Pathway will be available to School Students as Stackable VET, providing pre-vocational skills, work preparedness, and the opportunity to explore various fields before committing to a qualification.

Colour Cosmetica Academy offers a variety of approved Stackable and Advanced Stackable VET courses tailored for high school students. These courses are designed to equip students with pre- vocational skills, readiness for work, and exposure to different study areas.

Stackable VET courses may lead to further studies through VET for Secondary Schools, School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships, or continued education with Colour Cosmetica Academy. These courses also contribute credits towards SACE and are seamlessly integrated into the school timetable.

Embarking on a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship is an exciting opportunity that requires careful planning and collaboration among students, parents, and VET coordinators. Here’s what to consider:

Eligibility & School Approval

Student Eligibility: Students in Years 10, 11, or 12 can integrate a schoolbased apprenticeship or traineeship into their South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE), pending school approval.

School Consent: It’s essential to obtain your school’s agreement to ensure the apprenticeship or traineeship aligns with your educational program and contributes to SACE attainment.

Understanding SACE Integration

Check SACE Credits: Utilise the VET Recognition Register to understand how your chosen apprenticeship or traineeship will contribute to your SACE points.

Securing Agreement from All Parties

Obtain Necessary Approvals: To proceed, you’ll need consent from your school and, if you’re under 18, from a parent or guardian.

Selecting a Training Provider

Explore Training Courses: As part of your apprenticeship or traineeship, you’ll engage in off-the-job training with a registered training organization (RTO). Discuss with your employer if you have a preferred training provider in mind. Discover courses that lead to the qualifications you need in your chosen field. Note that while you can enroll in various courses, only some are subsidised under the VET for School Students program.

Exploring Suitable Pathways

Identify Interests and Passions: Reflect on activities you enjoy and subjects you’re passionate about. Consider how your hobbies or
interests might translate into a fulfilling Hairdressing, Barbering or Beauty career. This self-awareness is a valuable starting point for selecting the right apprenticeship or traineeship.

Seek Guidance: Discuss your aspirations with parents or guardians to determine if this pathway aligns with your goals. Then, consult your school’s VET coordinator or career counsellor to explore relevant industries and training options. They can assist in:

Finding an Employer

There are two primary approaches to securing an
apprenticeship or traineeship position:

1. Self-Initiated Search:

Networking: Reach out to Colour Cosmetica Academy, friends, family, or local businesses. Conduct online research to identify potential opportunities.
School Resources: Consult your VET coordinator and Colour Cosmetica Academy for leads on employers seeking apprentices or trainees.
Approved Employers: Search the Register of Approved Employers – Apprenticeships and Traineeships by business name or industry.

If you find an employer independently, ensure they are registered with the appropriate authorities. For assistance, contact the Skills Infoline or provide the employer with information on how to register.

2. Group Training Organization (GOT:)

Host Employer Arrangement: Enroll with a GTO, which will employ you and place you with a host business. This arrangement allows you to gain experience without the host business directly
employing you.

Developing the Training Contract:

Formal Agreement: This contract between you and your employer outlines the specifics of your apprenticeship or traineeship.
Involvement of an Apprenticeship Network Provider (ANP): An ANP will facilitate the process, including obtaining your school’s consent for the school-based Training Contract.
Training Provider Selection: The contract will specify your chosen training provider.

Once the Training Contract is signed, you can commence your apprenticeship or traineeship.

Creating the Training Plan:

Collaboration: Colour Cosmetica Academy will work with you and your employer to develop a Training Plan tailored to your apprenticeship or traineeship.

During the apprenticehsip or traineeship

Balancing Commitments:
School Attendance: Continue attending school part-time.
On-the-Job Training: Work with your employer to gain practical experience.
Off-the-Job Training: Participate in training sessions with Colour Cosmetica Academy.
Earnings:

Wages:
Typically determined by industry awards or enterprise agreements. You may be eligible for wage increases as you achieve new competencies. For detailed information on wages and conditions visit the Fairwork website.

Your Award: Wages, Allowances, and Entitlements

Understanding Your Wage:
Different types of jobs fall under specific awards, which set out the minimum wage or salary that employers are required to pay. For trainees and apprentices, most awards include a structured pay schedule that outlines wage progression throughout your apprenticeship or traineeship.

Allowances and Other Entitlements:
In addition to your wages, awards often include allowances and entitlements that support your training journey. For example:

Training Fees and Materials: Costs such as textbooks and other required resources may be covered by your employer, provided you are making satisfactory progress in your apprenticeship or traineeship.
Travel and Accommodation Allowances: Employers may be eligible for allowances to help cover your travel and accommodation costs if
you need to travel a significant distance to attend training sessions.

Clarifying Responsibilities:
If your award does not specify whether you or your employer should cover training-related costs, it’s important to address this during the development of your Training Contract. Negotiating and documenting these arrangements early ensures clarity and avoids potential misunderstandings later.

Post-school transition

Completion Pathways:
Full-Time or Part-Time: After finishing school, you can choose to continue your apprenticeship or traineeship full-time or part-time, subject to agreement with your employer.
Notification: Inform the relevant authorities of any changes to your working hours by completing a change of hours form.

By considering these factors and collaborating closely with all parties involved, students can successfully integrate a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship into their educational journey, setting the foundation for a promising career.
